Throwback Thursday: The Tallest Miss Universe Winners (So far)

The three tallest Miss Universe winners: Amelia Vega (2003), Wendy Fitzwilliam (1998) and Michelle McLean (1992)

Amelia Vega is tallest of the tallest at 6'1"

Amelia Vega is tallest of the tallest at 6’1″

In a beauty pageant like Miss Universe, there is no height imposition for as long as a candidate won her national finals fair and square. Just look at Miss Universe 1982 1st Runner-Up Patty Chong Kerkos of Guam. She’s not even 5’3″ in height (162cm to be exact).

Now if we check out the other end of the spectrum, there are three Miss Universe ladies who measure 6’0 and above. Amelia Vega launched her Miss Universe bid last 2003 on a high note and never looked back from the time she set foot in Panama City. In the case of Wendy Fitzwilliam, she met strong opposition from Veruska Ramirez. Both of them stood tall at 6’0, but the former eased herself out of a possible deadlock after giving a more impressive reply during the Q&A. And during Michelle McLean’s time, she had far more deadly challenges, what with Paola Turbay, Madhu Sapre and Carolina Izsak making things more difficult for the statuesque Namibian. Good thing she stayed consistent and never let go of the judges’ halo placed on her head from the semifinals to Top 5.

While Amelia looks like she is the shortest in the photos above, her height is mightier than either Wendy's or Michelle's.

While Amelia looks like she is the shortest in the photos above, her height is mightier than either Wendy’s or Michelle’s.

In the editions of Miss Universe following the latest year above (2003), the towering height still mattered to some extent but in my opinion, it was no longer on the ‘must-list’. The more important consideration is to find the most deserving winner. If she happens to be the tallest, well and good. And if she turns out to be the host delegate (like Olivia Culpo), better for the people at MUO who need not make adjustments to the personality of the winner (or relocation concerns for that matter). ;-)

Miss Universe on January 25?

Miss Universe on January 25?

Consider me baffled a bit. Why is it that everyone else is announcing the date of the next Miss Universe save for Miss Universe Organization (MUO) itself?

Now it’s NBC.com that has already stated in its website – and in bold letters at that – that Miss Universe (without any year indicated) will be shown on January 25, 2015.

Is Donald Trump preparing for a much-awaited big reveal? Or are we all just tired of hoping, waiting and expecting?

They better act fast. The pageant is starting to lose its luster.

Brazilian Melissa Gurgel will try to go for a Top 5/4-Peat in Miss Universe

image She is turning 20 by November 18, this eye candy of a model who’s a native of Ceara with a smoking hot body packed in a 5’6″ frame. And she is aiming to continue the running streak of Brazil in Miss Universe with at least a Top 5 placement equivalent to a 4-peat – something the Philippines achieved last year with Ara Arida.

Melissa Gurgel – newly-crowned Miss Brasil 2014 – is cut out for the beauty battle and she wants to improve on the collective placements of predecessors Priscila Machado, Gabriela Markus and Jakelyne Oliveira.

“A emoção é muito grande e eu tinha muita fé de que iria chegar até aqui, mas não deixou de ser uma surpresa. Deus me guiou e me deu muita atitude na hora do desfile. Graças a ele eu conquistei essa coroa”, postou Melissa no Twitter.” (Translation: “The emotion is very overwhelming and I had a lot of faith that it would get here, but it was still a surprise. God guided me and gave me lots of attitude at the time of the parade. Thanks to him I won this crown,” Melissa posted on Twitter.

If it's on the Miss Universe website, it must be final.

If it’s on the Miss Universe website, it must be final.

1mu Since the announcement is already splashed on the Miss Universe website, then it is considered final. January 25, 2015 it will be.

The only difference is that Florida International University will be the venue instead of the previously stated Trump National Doral Miami. Correct me if I am wrong, but this could be the first time our favorite beauty pageant will be held in an academic institution.

For now, the Miss Universe contestants can rest easy, knowing that they already have a place to call home base.

Look who’s not excited about holding Miss Universe at FIU

The faculty members of Florida International University (FIU) are not happy with the Miss Universe invasion of their campus.

image In the article written by Rebeca Piccardo for FIUSM.com News, there seems to be growing resistance from Faculty members of Florida International University (FIU) in having the Miss Universe Pageant happening inside the campus grounds. Citing among others the possible loss of credibility and tainted image of the academic institution, they do not like the idea of hosting the finals of Donald Trump’s beauty extravaganza even if it means free scholarships and worldwide promotion on Primetime TV.

A call for cancellation has been started. And if this move prospers, then it might become another source of headache for the Miss Universe Organization (MUO), unless the university officials choose to put their feet down and insist that the show must go on.

What say you, dear readers?

Coming Real Soon: The New Miss Universe Crown

Miss USA Nia Sanchez, DIC Head Luboš Říha and Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler make a toast to the future unveiling of the new Miss Universe crown.

wpid-wp-1404604760121.png So this is supposed to be the real thing now.

With Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler and Miss USA Nia Sanchez visiting the Headquarters of Diamonds International Corporation (DIC) in Prague and meeting with Luboš Říha (see photo above), it only means that the new Miss Universe crown will be unveiled soon. And I hope we’ll all get to see it before the Holidays.

A lot of individuals have speculated on how it will look. Some even went to the extent of uploading images that are not even close to the design (or they just want to excite gullible readers).

I have only two requests. First, I want a crown that is a pleaser. Second, I certainly wish that it will be a keeper. For the long-term, that is. ;-)

Miss Philippines Geraldine Asis (center in black gown) with her little sister during Miss Universe 1987

Aren’t they just the cutest?

I’m talking about the Miss Universe Little Sisters who – while lip-synching the song “You Are My Star” – added just the right amount of cuteness to the Long Gown Competition of thirteen (13) editions from 1983 to 1995. All of the Miss Universe delegates during this period experienced having a little sister during the finals, but only the ladies who made it to the semifinals were actually able to walk down the stage hand-in-hand with the cuties. And for the record, only three (3) Filipinas were able to do so – Desiree Verdadero from 1984, Geraldine Edith Asis from 1987 (see photo on the left) and Charlene Gonzalez from 1994.

Don’t you wish these little girls would make an adorable comeback in Doral Miami for old times’ sake? I have a feeling Donald Trump would thumb down the idea, but I don’t see why he can’t be prevailed upon by the organization for something heartwarming. After all, he already started revamping the Miss Universe image by pushing for more charity-driven causes (like what Gabriela Isler has been up to the past full year). Why not include a touch of wholesome presence in the finals? :-D

Let’s reminisce a little more and watch a video of the Little Sisters of Manila during Miss Universe 1994.

Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler

By the looks of it, the Miss Universe Cordaid Fund must be really setting aside generous funding for its Palawan-located rehabilitation projects in the Philippines that were started as a result of the deadly Yolanda ST last year. The continued commitment has actually just been sealed again .

In a recent private event held at the Philippine Consulate General Office in New York City, Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler, Miss USA 2014 Nia Sanchez and Miss Teen USA K Lee Grahams met up with Philippine Consul General Mario Lopez de Leon Jr. to further solidify the tie-up and also to give progress reports on the ongoing projects. Also present were Miss Universe Organization President Paula Shugart and Jan Willem Wegdem who is the Shelter Specialist and Development Manager of Cordaid.

In her emotional speech, Gabriela related that “After I finished my studies I wondered what I would be doing in my life, the Miss Venezuela Pageant came and then later on I was crowned Miss Universe. That was one of the happiest moments of my life! When I had the opportunity to help the people of Coron, Palawan, and the Banuang Daan community, I knew this is what I want to do in life- to help people!” said the teary eyed statuesque beauty. She recalled how respectful, unselfish and welcoming the people were during her visit to Coron.”They have no food, but they still made a big meal for me! I had to ask them to eat the meal with me. They did not have electricity, clean water or even homes, but they made sure I felt at home. I will definitely continue my work to help them!

image

Gabriela delivering her emotional speech.

The Philippines really holds a special place in the heart of Miss Universe. Hopefully, everything will run smoothly so that project completion dates are met on the dot. Because by now, Cordaid is already starting with their next big effort, and that is to help prevent the spread of the Ebola virus. Just the same, the partnership between them remains very strong.

Above is the freshly updated Press Introduction to the Miss Universe Organization

mulogo1 Just recently, a re-intro (of sorts) of the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) was uploaded to the website. The document above should serve as the Official Press Introduction. According to my friend Paul Palmero, this should be a sign that more news about the next Miss Universe happening in Doral Miami will be upcoming.

And because of this, there’s more reason to reinvigorate our excitement for Miss Universe 2014, right? ;-)

First off, many thanks to Drew Francisco of Missosology for uploading one of the latest interviews of Miss Universe Philippines 2014 MJ Lastimosa below.

In the video, MJ talks about her preparations for the 64th Miss Universe in Doral, Miami as well as the ladies she perceives to be her strongest opponents in the competition. She also touched on the constant delay that has been pushing the pageant to its present January 25 schedule.

Watch it. For one, I’m quite happy with her new air of confidence. She strings together thoughts more fluidly, and has avoided getting way too elaborate in her explanations. In short, she is a lot more conversation-friendly now than trying to impress too much. ;-)

Let’s take a closer look now

A picture is worth a thousand words, or in this case, a mysterious crown all fans and followers of Miss Universe are eagerly anticipation.

But please don’t take the images to mean that what Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler is wearing is already the new DIC (Diamonds International Corportation) output for the beauty pageant.

If you ask me, I hope it’s not the final output from Lubos Riha and his team. It looks like an art-deco head gear that would be fancied by an Archandroid-conceptualized performer like R&B singer Janelle Monae.

How about you, dear readers? Are you sold to something like this? ;-)

IMG_0559 Okay, so with the new logo out, the next edition is still branded as the 63rd Miss Universe. It makes sense that I keep on avoiding calling (and tagging) it Miss Universe 2014.

And the ladies scheduled to leave for Doral Miami are all giggly excited about the upcoming event finally coming to reality.

For example, Miss Universe Philippines 2014 MJ Lastimosa’s Official Send-Off will take place tomorrow, December 18. And to make the event more festive like a Christmas Party, there will be a Charity Treat given to the Adopted Community of BPCI and Dairy Queen. I can see fun games galore and gift-giving all around. Yay! :-D

Sunday Senti Specials: The Youngest and Oldest to be crowned Miss Universe

Miss Universe 1952 Armi Kuusela and Miss Universe 1997 Brook Lee hold the age records for the youngest and oldest to be crowned Miss Universe, respectively.

image

What are the chances of the oldest age record being rewritten on January 25?

At 17 years and 303 days old, the first-ever Miss Universe – Armi Kuusela of Finland – is the youngest to be crowned as winner back in 1952.

On the other hand, Miss Universe 1997 Brook Antonette Mahealani Lee of the USA is the oldest on record to win the title at the age of 26 years and 128 days.

Now, in the current roster of candidates for the 63rd Miss Universe Pageant in Doral Miami, there are four (4) pre-arrival ladies who are at least 27 years and they are Laurien Angelista of Curacao, Brittany Bell of Guam, Marline Barberena of Nicaragua and MJ Lastimosa of the Philippines. What are the chances of one of them setting a new age record come January 25?

image

Will one of these four 27 year-old ladies become the 63rd Miss Universe?

I know. Age is a lame factor in determining the winner.

But honestly, do you think it will still matter? ;-)

Venus, Shamcey, Janine and Ariella - Miss Universe Philippines all

People say that an interview always gives away the true character of a person. If someone is being sincere, pretentious or overdone, trust a one-on-one to reveal what she consciously or unconsciously wants to establish to listeners and/or interviewers.

Following the release of the web interview of Miss Universe Philippines 2014 MJ Lastimosa yesterday, let us look back at the respective video turns of our four (4) representatives from 2010-2013. After watching all of them, tell me what traits were individually made more obvious by Venus Raj, Shamcey Supsup, Janine Tugonon and Ariella Arida in just under three minutes. ;-)

How does MJ's NatCos compare to the ones in the last 15 years?

How does MJ’s NatCos compare to the ones in the last 15 years?

I hear all of you loud and clear. Is this really the worst national costume (left photo) ever made for a Philippine rep to Miss Universe? The answer is a resounding three-letter word of affirmation. And I’m pretty sure that you have made your noise to all the concerned authorities at BPCI by now.

I don’t really want to dwell on the inspiration for the bad creation. Because it is quite obvious that the designer was never inspired while doing the same.

So comparing what MJ wore to the outputs from 1999-2013 (video above), we really hit rock bottom this year. Hopefully, the next phrase should apply – there’s no other way but up. And I am saying that with a trembling voice.

Watch her swimsuit and gown performances now to ease some of the pain.

Sunday Senti Specials 2: The Classic and the Ultra-Modern Miss Universe Crowns

This is the classic Miss Universe crown used for decades in the pageant. The one above was presented in honor of former Miss Universe President Harold Glasser who passed away last 2011.

image There is always an affected sentimental soul inside of me whenever I look at the old Miss Universe crown that has been used for decades before the evolution of the new ones changed hands from Mikimoto to Diamond Nexus Lab to the present maker, DIC Holding.

Aside from being the same crown worn by the Philippines’ two winners – Gloria Diaz and Margarita Moran – it also brings back memories of the past that have significantly molded my growing-up years as a pageant fan and chronicler. I can still remember trying my darndest best to look for one that closely resembled its shape and design, only to end up playing around with a cheaper alternative worn by my two sisters during their respective Santacruzan duties in the province.

image

This is the new, shiny and sleek Miss Universe crown to be placed on the head of whoever will win in the Miami finals

image Now that we have a shiny new head adornment for the 63rd Miss Universe, it clearly beckons us all to move forward more aggressively and in a trajectory that looks into an ultra-modern pageant odyssey only our favorite worldwide beauty search can offer.

The first wearer of the DIC Holding crown will definitely feel the sense of woman empowerment that it brings. And it is my sincere hope that the 63rd will do her best to expand her reign even wider than what the 62nd so richfully served in hers. :-)

Paulina Vega Dieppa owns them for now. When will it become available next?

wpid-wp-1422105546390.jpeg There are so many rumors floating online that the 64th edition of Miss Universe, or the appropriate Miss Universe 2015, will take place anywhere between August and November.

Some are saying that Doral Miami enjoyed the whole experience so much that the city is looking forward to hosting once more.

But the more aggressive posters state that the planned Manila hosting will go full blast in just a few (this one is really way up in the polluted air, if you ask me).

And another set of claimers interject that the already announced (or pledged if you will) news of Budapest taking the baton will definitely be next (what I know is that Hungary will enter the picture in 2016).

Regardless, I don’t care where for as long as Miss Universe 2015 will actually happen in 2015 and not overlapping in periods which gives the title a double-digit tag instead of a year.

Be it Doral Miami again, or back to Las Vegas, or Manila for the 3rd or Budapest for the 1st.

Just be back before the end of the year.

I Miss U too quickly. ;-)

MJ Lastimosa during her homecoming presscon

As we close another complete chapter of international pageantry with the crowning of the 63rd Miss Universe Paulina Vega a week ago, allow me to reminisce on the Philippine participation in the same, with focus on the achievements we have made.

Yesterday, I gathered from reliable sources that Miss Universe Philippines 2014 Mary Jean ‘MJ’ Lastimosa actually finished 6th overall (how heartbreaking!) in the competition. She lost by a mere 0.625 of a point to Yasmin Verheijen of the Netherlands going into the Top 5.

Now if only she entered the magic circle and notched 2nd Runner-up at least in Miami, then the country would’ve already conquered all possible placements in our favorite beauty pageant.

Watch the video below showing our Miss Universe reps from 1952 to the 63rd edition.
